Herbal Supplements for Asthma

Asthma is a condition where the person’s airways are highly sensitive and overly responsive to irritation to the point where they narrow to the point where it is nearly impossible to breathe. The tightly constricted airways results in shortness of breath, wheezing, coughing, and tightness in the chest. There are medications that can combat this occurrence but there are herbal supplements that help overcome the sensitivity and resulting constriction of the airways. Herbal supplements remove the symptoms and go to the root cause of asthma.

5 Herbal Supplements for Asthma

1. Elecampane

Elecampane (Inula helenium), also known as Horse-heal is a large herb with big yellow flowers. The root smells a little like camphor. It is used in making absinthe and is considered a great tonic for the lungs and bronchia. It is soothing to the bronchial tube linings and allows for better nutrient absorption. Because of these factors, it has the capacity to decrease asthma attacks. It has been in use in England for centuries as a medicinal plant. It was a cure for illnesses as far back as the Middle Ages.

2. Jimson Weed

Jimson weed (Datura stramonium) can be useful in reducing bronchial spasms during asthma attacks. It also dries up membrane secretions thus helping in the battle again asthma attacks. However jimson weed is a strong hallucinogenic and is considered toxic so while it is used in medications, including over the counter medications, it is not commonly used as an herbal supplement in spite of its effectiveness.

3. Evening Primrose

Evening primrose roots make a tea that is antispasmodic and great for treating asthma. This wildflower has been used medicinally for centuries and one of its main uses was as a treatment for respiratory issues. Evening primrose oil comes from the plant’s seeds and contains the essential fatty acid gamma-linolenic acid (GLA). Studies now prove that evening primrose is truly a herbal treatment that benefits those who suffered from asthma.

4. Common Mullein

Common mullein (Verbascum thapsus) is an excellent remedy for upper respiratory conditions and this includes asthma. It’s been recognized as a respiratory repair treatment for two millennia. The components of mullein that give it this ability include the expectorant saponins and emollient mucilage. In the old days, people would chew a piece of the root to get the effect. Now, a tea can be made and the same anti-asthma effects received via the tea. In Germany, it is authorized medicinally as a catarrh treatment.

5. Ginger

Ginger made into ginger tea with crushed garlic added is an easy and effective herbal treatment for asthma. It prevents asthmas attacks, soothes the conditions that set an asthma attack and goes a long way to curing asthma. The asthma-reducing ginger tea is made from dried ginger. Some people use chopped ginger to make the tea as well. There is no need to make the ginger tea too strong. It is highly effective even in weak solutions.

Other herbal supplements for asthma include white mulberry bark, coltsfoot mucilage and compounds, asclepias tuberose, red clover tea, and turmeric.
